Know Your Rights
-
Empowering Families Through Education
We offer Know Your Rights (KYR) education to empower immigrant workers and their families with the essential legal knowledge needed to navigate uncertain situations. These sessions create space for learning, preparation, and confidence, helping families better protect themselves and their loved ones.
-
Accessible Workshops
Our workshops are available in multiple languages to ensure inclusivity and accessibility. Topics include immigrant rights, removal defenses, recognizing and reporting labor trafficking, family preparedness, and how to safely interact with ICE at home or work. Additional sessions are tailored to address emerging needs within the community.
-
Building Tools for Protection
Each KYR session equips participants with practical tools to respond effectively in challenging situations. Whether it is preparing legal documents, understanding the role of law enforcement, or recognizing exploitative practices, families leave workshops with actionable steps to safeguard their rights and futures.
-
Training Service Providers
In addition to community workshops, we provide specialized training for service providers, partner organizations, and government agencies. These trainings cover immigrant rights, labor trafficking, outreach strategies, and advocacy services. By strengthening the capacity of those who work alongside farmworker and migrant families, we ensure that community members receive informed, compassionate, and effective support.
Family Preparedness
-
Ensuring Family Stability
Family preparedness plans and clinics are essential because they equip immigrant families with the legal tools needed to protect their loved ones in times of crisis. Many families live with the constant worry of detention, deportation, or unexpected health events. By completing forms such as Designation of Parental Relationship and Standby Guardianship, parents can ensure their children have trusted caregivers if they are unable to provide care, whether temporarily or permanently. These steps offer peace of mind and help maintain stability for children during uncertain times.
-
Facilitating Smooth Transitions
Preparedness clinics also assist with forms that provide clear guidance for child care, medical care, and financial decisions. Documents like Health Care Proxies, Power of Attorney, Travel Authorizations, and Pick-Up Authorizations outline who can make important decisions for children or handle responsibilities if parents are not available. Having these in place prevents confusion, delays, and disputes during emergencies, allowing families to focus on their well-being.
-
Educating Families About Their Rights
In addition to legal forms, clinics provide Know Your Rights trainings to ensure families understand their protections during interactions with law enforcement or immigration authorities. Knowledge of these rights can prevent unnecessary legal consequences and empower families to advocate for themselves. Parents are also encouraged to take proactive steps, such as applying for passports for U.S.-born children, so they are prepared for future needs.
-
Providing Access to Legal Support
Finally, family preparedness clinics connect families with free legal consultations from qualified attorneys or DOJ-accredited representatives. Families receive guidance on which forms are most appropriate for their situation and help completing them correctly. This access to professional support ensures families can make informed decisions and avoid falling victim to misinformation or costly mistakes. Beyond paperwork, clinics provide hope and stability by helping families prepare for the unexpected.
